Queen of chick-lit, Sophie Kinsella, frequently tops the UK and US bestseller lists. Her entertaining novels, especially the Shopohololic series, have earned her a strong following and thousands of likes on her Facebook page. Random House approached us to design a Facebook app for the promotion of the new novel, Wedding Night; the aim being to boost the number of ‘likes’ before the publication date.
This called for a fun, simple activity that would engage current fans and encourage them to spread the word. Competitions always help to add a little incentive: in this case the chance of winning a luxury trip to Greece. To enter, fans had to share three daily quotes from the book via the app for seven days. Only then would they accumulate points (see the jar of sand on the right) and unlock the competition.
The app invited prolonged engagement with the activity and created the motivation for fans to ‘Share the love for Sophie’. Facebook traffic increased and an effective pre-publication buzz was created.
